A Beauty and Fashion Guide to the 1920s

Since the release of the film 'The Great Gatsby' the 1920s has become a very fashionable era.

I love the signature makeup looks and fashions inspired by all things Hollywood and glamour.

Here is my guide to beauty and fashion in the 1920s...

Fashion
Women's fashion in the 1920s was a rejection of Victorian style and the Gibson Girl look.

The fashions in the 1920s was strongly influenced by the culture that created it. 1920s fashion was perhaps the most influential in creating modern tastes in women's clothes.

It was the decade of the first swing dancer (aka. Flapper) called Lindy Hop. From this the 'Flapper Dress' was born.

Flapper Dresses have been worn on the red carpet by many celebrities, for example, Kate Moss.

If you are looking to buy a more modern style of flapper or swing dress, ASOS have a great selection: here!

Long beaded necklaces and feather headbands were paired with the typical flapper dress.

Shoes- ASOS- £19.99
Necklace- Miss Selfridge - £5.00

Hair
Hair in the 1920s was either curls or an elfin crop. The actress Louise Brooks was a massive style icon and introduced the elfin style hair cut.

Another popular hair style was a soft wavy look.

Makeup
Makeup in the 1920s was all about the bold, smokey eye, thin, precise eyebrows and the perfectly sculpted red lip. A pale complexion was also preferred. Women were encouraged to wear as much makeup as possible as lots of makeup was seen as being very beautiful.

Drugstore products I recommend for recreating classic 1920s makeup:

Eyes- I think an eyeshadow palette is an easier way to recreate a smokey eye as all the colours you need are there.

The Falsies Mascara

Lips- A shiny but still pigmented classic red lipstick is perfect for a bold 1920s lip look. Women made their lips look smaller and a more precise lip shape.

Face- Pale complexions were fashionable in the 1920s so white powders were often used. To create a 1920s complexion use a foundation one shade lighter than your normal shade.

Then matte your face with a pale powder.

Then gently define your cheekbones using a matte bronzer.

Apply a dot of blusher to the apples of your cheeks. A red blusher is best.
